Since ancient times, the word "spring" in Japan has meant the beginning of something. The name "Almost Spring," released in spring 2015, hopes to evoke the same feelings of excitement and warmth that you feel as spring approaches.

NINE LEAVES is a craft distillery founded in 2013 in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, by Yoshiharu Takeuchi, named after his family crest, the leafy bamboo leaf.

With high standards for quality, Takeuchi built his micro-distillery. He uses muscovado sugar (pure, raw cane sugar), which is of great importance in Japan and is made exclusively from Japanese sugarcane. After double distillation, an exceptionally pure, clear rum emerges, presenting itself on the nose with a very fruity bouquet and, compared with other aged rum varieties, offering a great diversity of aromas. This white Nine Leaves Clear, with its fruity notes, is reminiscent of a blend of fruit brandy, rum, and rhum agricole. But above all, with the young cask-aged bottlings, Takeuchi has shown in recent years just how good young rum can be.  His willingness to experiment with a wide variety of casks (American oak, French oak, ex-Cabernet Sauvignon, ex-brandy, ex-sherry PX, and much more) leaves nothing to be desired. The comparatively young age of the youngest bottlings from 2014 at 6 months and the now oldest from 2019 at 4 years is by no means too young or unbalanced; rather, it exceeds all expectations and makes us look forward to the upcoming bottlings with anticipation and excitement.

The great variety and regular bottlings have now also made the rounds among collectors and are extremely popular.

Yoshiharu Takeuchi pursues the production of his rum with precisely this Japanese passion for craftsmanship and keeps surprising time and again. Nine Leaves is definitely a distillery to watch for upcoming bottlings.
