The Wagemut PX 01, originally from Barbados, first matured for ten years in former bourbon oak casks on the island itself. It is then refined in Germany, where the rum spends a further three months in freshly emptied Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. PX stands for Pedro Ximénez – the sweetest of all sherry styles, made from sun-dried raisins. Thanks to a special special license, Wagemut imports the sherry directly from Spain in large casks. Before being filled with rum, these are first soaked with sherry, reactivating the wood. The remaining amount of sherry in the cask gives the rum its distinctive, seductive sweetness.

It matured for 12 years in bourbon casks and then for one month in new American white oak casks, which had previously held PX sherry for two years. The small casks meant more contact between liquid and wood, which in turn imparted a strong, woody flavor. The sherry sweetness rounds off the flavor profile. No coloring or artificial flavors.
