This Real McCoy 12 YO was matured for a full 12 years in former bourbon barrels before being bottled. This 12-year-old Distillers Cut was bottled at a robust 46% ABV. The six percent difference (compared to the "regular" The Real McCoy 12 YO) carries the aromas more intensely without making it seem alcoholic!
The Real McCoy 12 Distillers Cut impresses with a very mature yet complex aroma.
Nose: notes of buttery oak and spicy dark chocolate set the stage for enjoyment.
Palate: caramel, complex wood notes, and a hint of tobacco come through.
Finish: the alcohol is perfectly integrated – very smooth, full-bodied, and anything but flat – a long and spectacular interplay of aromas.
About THE REAL McCOY
The Real McCoy Rum is based on the story of Captain Bill McCoy, a so-called rum runner from the Prohibition era. Around 1920, when strict alcohol prohibition was in force in the USA, Bill McCoy began transporting rum from the Caribbean to just off the coast of New York. As a shrewd businessman, he sold his rum in international waters. This meant he was not breaking any American laws, and the buyers bore the risk. He became known for his high standards of quality because at the time he was one of the few (if not the only one) who did not dilute his rum with other liquids.
In memory of Bill McCoy, his tradition lives on today. These high quality standards are upheld by none other than Richard Seale, Master Distiller of the Foursquare Distillery in Barbados.
R.L. Seale is valued worldwide for his outstanding work. He is no fan of dishonest products. His bottlings stand for honest craftsmanship, with no added sugar or flavoring, coloring, or other adulteration.
Furthermore, the age statements on his products always correspond to their actual age and are therefore not blends with younger rum. Only different casks from the same vintage are married together – hence the name Single Blended Rum (in this case, Single stands for one vintage and Blended for the different casks from that same vintage)
The Real McCoy is made from a combination of pot and column still distillates, with the dominant share always being pot still, which also sets it apart from the other bottlings, and it is matured for between 3 and 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. Exceptions are limited editions, for which maturation is also often carried out in, for example, Madeira casks.
