On the Kintyre Peninsula, more precisely in Campbeltown, lies the Glen Scotia distillery. In 1832, the distillery was founded by Steward, Galbraith & Co. under the name Scotia Distillery and has since had an eventful history. Glenscotia. With its lively setting and the rugged Atlantic breeze, this coastal town has something magical about it. “Mull of Kintyre, oh mist rolling in from the sea, my desire is always to be here …” Paul McCartney sings of the wish to always stay on this peninsula. It is probably not only the mystical allure of the landscape that is a good reason for that — but also the unique single malt produced here.
Records as far back as the 1800’s show that Campbeltown, like much of Scotland, has enjoyed a long-standing love affair with the use of sherry casks in whisky maturation. Given it's fortunate location on the West Coast of Scotland and ease of access to the sea trading routes of the time, it is hardly surprising that Campbeltown enjoyed the first choice of some of the finest sherry casks in the world. So it is fitting that one of our oldest and most refined expressions, the Glen Scotia 18-year-old, enjoys a lengthy twelve-month finish in Oloroso sherry casks, delivering a floral sweetness whilst never masking the renowned distillery character that lies beneath. GLEN SCOTIA ~ IT’S THE WHISKY THAT BINDS US. Nose: Crisp saltiness, perfumed floral notes and thick sweet toffee. Palate: aromatic, spicy, Rich deep vanilla fruit flavours, apricot and pineapple, plump sultana. Afinish: Long and dry with gentle warming spice.
