Icons of Wales No 9/50 “The Headliner” No. 9 in the Icons of Wales series by Penderyn is called “THE HEADLINER”. So far, only one Welshman has made it to the office of British Prime Minister. DAVID LLOYD GEORGE (1863-1945) was a social reformer, a symbol of the revival of Welsh identity, and generated more headlines than any other statesman of the early 20th century. Although he himself was a “teetotaler” (abstainer), he made an important contribution to quality assurance in the modern whisky industry. “Alcohol causes more damage in war than all German U-boats combined,” said Lloyd George. He therefore tried everything possible to make alcohol consumption more difficult. His most important achievement was to secure, in 1915, the so-called “Immature Spirits Act”, which required whisky to mature in casks for at least 3 years and one day before it could be sold. As is well known, this still applies today and is perhaps the rule that most sets whisky apart from almost all other spirits. The Icons of Wales N° 9/50 was bottled at a powerful 46 % and received a finish in Jamaica Rum and Ruby Port casks.
