Collection: Torabhaig Brand Whisky Scotch
Welcome to Torabhaig, a small independent distillery on the Sleat peninsula of the Isle of Skye. We love exploring new and unique peat flavors inspired by our beautiful area and thriving community. We create subtle, elegant smoky aromas – our own house style ‘Smoke with taste’ – ‘Smoke with flavor’. This captures our very own house style, which unfolds in a collection of Limited Edition releases, our Legacy Series, so you can follow our story too. Behind the Torabhaig distillery lies the Sound of Sleat. A narrow, powerful sea channel that separates Skye from the mainland. In Gaelic, it is called Sinne Shlèite. Our unique immediate surroundings: the land, water, and climate shape our unique house style. The restoration of the old farmstead to revive it as our distillery has also significantly influenced the making of our whisky. And we must not forget our people. The Torabhaig family and the community on the Sleat peninsula. An odd bunch brought together by a love of whisky and our homeland. Without them, our whisky would not be what it is. Reviving Torabhaig. From a derelict farmstead to a functioning distillery. The distillery we have built at Torabhaig is truly a product of its environment and origin, shaped by the wild landscape and harsh climate of the Isle of Skye. We first found it as an abandoned but sturdy, handsome farm, which happened to be the perfect site for a distillery. Quite pragmatically, as is always the way in the Hebrides, the original buildings were constructed with stones from the nearby ruin Caistel Chamuis. We saw it as our duty to preserve this history and bring the buildings back to life by building more than just a distillery. Over four years, we painstakingly restored the dilapidated buildings, uncovering even more history, including the remains of an old mill wheel, which we renovated and which is now powered by the cooling water from our
stills. Fully operational since January 2017, we are proud to have created our brand home with a strong sense of place. Our elegantly rugged surroundings inspire our signature style; the power of peat smoke, tastefully tempered on the Isle of Skye. At Torabhaig, we all care deeply about doing things differently, and that makes us new and unique. Founder Neil Macleod Mathieson had the vision to help shape the next generation of whisky makers. So he trained 9 locals as our distillers (our Journeymen) and challenged them to develop different perspectives. We welcomed them into our family, knowing they will pass on our traditions from generation to generation to keep our local culture alive. Each year, a month is set when each of our distillers has free rein over the distillery to create their own whisky. Each distiller is responsible for the spirit during production and stays close to the whisky during maturation. Once the whisky is ready for bottling, they earn their Journeyman’s medals and their creations bear their name. Many consider peat to be a dirty and intimidating word. It implies a strong, medicinal smoky taste that can be off-putting. But that is only one side of peat. We explore new, exciting peat notes. Subtle, elegant smoky aromas with spice from the casks and brine from the sea. The smoke brings out the flavor and better balances the whisky. That’s why we call our house style ‘Smoke with Taste’ – ‘Smoke with flavor’. And so we named our fourth chapter of the series. The planning of the distillery under its then owner Sir Iain Noble was approved in 2002. After his death, it was taken over by Mossburn Distillers, a subsidiary of Marussia Beverages BV. Construction of the distillery began in 2014 based on a design by architects Simpson and Brown. The construction costs at the time were estimated at over 5 million pounds. The work to install the distillery in a former farm was completed in 2017. In 2019, the distillery adopted a goat named “Goaty” (goat is the English word for Ziege) as its official mascot. In 2021, the distillery auctioned two bottles of its first whisky for a charitable cause. The annual production of pure alcohol is 500,000 liters, distilled in wooden washbacks and two copper stills. The distillery includes a visitor center. The sale of the first release began in February 2021 under the name Legacy Series 2017. The second whisky from Torabhaig is called Allt Gleann single malt and is named after one of the distillery’s stills. This second of four releases in the Legacy Series came to market in summer 2021 and has an alcohol content of 46% ABV. In 2022, some of the whiskies were selected by the National Museum of Scotland for archiving. The whiskies from Torabhaig are described as peaty.
