Nose: Pronounced and deep, with a combination of medicinal notes, spices (cardamom, saffron), fruits (blood orange, roasted mango), terpene-rich notes (lava), and autumnal aromas (walnut, roasted chestnut). On exposure to air, riper aromas unfold, such as fig, incense, cocoa powder, and tobacco.

Palate: Rich and supple, characterized by pine resin, burnt sugar cane, and camphor. Salty, licorice-like, and mineral (Zan), it deepens with powdery, rooty, and oriental notes (curry, turmeric).

Finish: Dense and full-bodied, with hints of chewed licorice, sandalwood, and incense. The lingering finish remains fresh and balsamic (cedar, pine, Vosges candies) and recalls cardamom tea.

Between 2013 and 2023, Yoshiharu Takeuchi distilled rum of outstanding quality using traditional techniques used exclusively for single malt whiskies.

From 2013 to 2023, Yoshiharu Takeuchi realized a vision: to craft extraordinary rum using artisanal techniques traditionally reserved for single malt. At his Nine Leaves distillery in Otsu, Japan, he managed every aspect of production himself - from fermenting kokuto whole cane sugar to labeling - ensuring that Nine Leaves rum reflects this dedication in every drop.

After the distillery closed, La Maison & Velier acquired the entire stock. Decorated in the style of the Japanese card game Unsun Karuta, the limited bottlings now bring Nine Leaves back to life.

The Nine Leaves 2018 - Armagnac Casks was blended from three 300-liter casks. Its profile offers a very pleasant sequence of fruity, spicy, liqueur-like, herbal, and floral notes, each more delicate than the last.

Two fortified wine casks produced the Nine Leaves 2020 - PX Sherry Casks - a deep interplay of opulently floral, lively, and fruitily fresh characteristics.

Similar to the Small Batch, the Nine Leaves 2020 - PX Single Cask #21 stands out for its remarkable depth. The rum reveals notes of lightly toasted cane sugar and also unfolds along medicinal, floral, fruity, and honeyed paths, all of which testify to its maturity.

In the first years of the distillery, Yoshi had already released several Angel's Half bottlings. The first products, however, were aged only 6 months or 1 year and were therefore comparatively very young. After 3 years of cask maturation, this new rum appears significantly darker and more mature. In terms of taste, it impresses with an enormous leap from an aromatic perspective. Greater complexity and more depth clearly set it apart from its predecessors!

NINE LEAVES - is a craft distillery founded in 2013 in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, by Yoshiharu Takeuchi, named after his family crest, the nine-leaf bamboo leaf.

 With high standards for quality, Takeuchi built up his micro-distillery. He uses a muscovado sugar (pure, raw cane sugar), which holds great significance in Japan and is made exclusively from Japanese sugar cane. After double distillation, an exceptionally pure, clear rum emerges, presenting a very fruity bouquet on the nose and, compared with other rested rum varieties, displaying a great diversity of aromas. With its fruity notes, this white Nine Leaves Clear is reminiscent of a blend of fruit brandy, rum, and rhum agricole. But above all, with the young cask-aged bottlings, Takeuchi has shown in recent years just how good young rum can be.  His willingness to experiment with a wide variety of casks (American oak, French oak, ex-Cabernet Sauvignon, ex-brandy, ex-sherry PX, and many more) leaves nothing to be desired. The comparatively young age of the youngest bottlings from 2014 at 6 months and the oldest by now from 2019 at 4 years is in no way too young or unbalanced; rather, it surpasses all expectations and leaves us looking forward to the coming bottlings with anticipation and excitement.

The great variety and the regularly released new bottlings have meanwhile also made the rounds among collectors and are very popular.

Monozukuri - this is the driving force behind the passion to create a perfect product. Yoshiharu Takeuchi pursues the production of his rum with precisely this Japanese passion for craftsmanship and keeps surprising people time and again. With Nine Leaves, there is every reason to look forward to the upcoming bottlings. Since only small quantities are produced, with an average of just 80 to 120 bottles coming to Germany, you should decide quickly!
