There are single malts that faithfully follow the classic path of their distillery, and others that quite deliberately break the mold to open up new taste experiences. With the "Contrasts" series, the Speyside distillery Benromach proves that courage to leave gaps and craftsmanship-driven curiosity can lead to exceptional results that break open the familiar flavor spectrum.

Tradition meets enzymatic innovation

Distilled in 2012, this 12-year-old single malt marks an exciting turning point in Benromach's production. For this limited edition, a particularly enzyme-rich barley was used, which is usually more commonly employed in the production of grain whisky. After double distillation, the spirit matured for over a decade exclusively in first-fill bourbon barrels, before being bottled in 2024. The result is an unpeated whisky that shows the craft philosophy of the distillery founded in 1898 in a completely new light.

In a bright golden hue (C3), the distillate presents itself in the glass and immediately releases a bouquet of apple notes and lemon candies. On the palate, a creamy texture unfolds, carried by intense notes of pineapple, grapefruit, and lime, harmoniously complemented by the sweetness of honey and vanilla. The finish is remarkably long-lasting and surprises with a delicate peppermint note as well as a subtle oak spice that underscores the influence of the first-fill casks.
