Collection: O Reizinho Brand Rum Madeira

O Reizinho Distillery is based on the island of Madeira. The entire process takes place there - from sugarcane cultivation to bottling. To do this, six different varieties of sugarcane are sourced from local farmers. Since the island does not offer much land for sugarcane cultivation, the sugarcane juice used for rum production is already rare and valuable.

Distillation itself takes place in the cellar rooms of the house, as it has for many

generations in the Ferreira family. In fact, even before the distillery was officially registered in 2013, the Ferreira family had already been enjoying the traditional production of their own sugarcane brandy. Then as now, the finest Rum Agrícole de Madeira rums are produced there.

About the origin of the name "O Reizinho"

"O Reizinho" means "the little king." In Portuguese, the suffix "inho" is usually used to make nouns sound affectionate or diminutive.

This nickname was given to the great-grandfather of Pedro Ferreira (the creator of the brand), who was born in 1875 two months early.

Back then, there was hardly any chance of surviving such a premature birth, so the midwife ran to the priest's house in the middle of the night to have the baby baptized before it died, so it could go to heaven. In the middle of the night, the priest hears a knock at the door and opens it. He finds the midwife there, who begs him to baptize the baby. Half asleep, the priest holds the baby in his arms and says that the child will be "O Reizinho no céu," a little king in heaven.

Of course, the baby did not die; otherwise this story would not have been passed down. Instead, he lived to be 94 and had 14 children. He was a tall, proud man.

So the nickname stayed and was passed down through the generations. Today, the name is used in honor of the great-grandfather for the rums.
