Collection: Benromach Brand Scotch Whisky

The brothers Duncan and John MacCallum of the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown and F. W. Brickmann founded the Benromach Distillery Company in 1898. They commissioned the architect Charles Doig to design the distillery, and towards the end of the year, construction began on a site owned by Alexander Edward. In May 1900, whisky production started, but by 1907 the distillery was shut down as Brickmann had fallen into financial difficulties. The MacCallums then tried on their own under the name Forres Distillery, but by 1910 they gave up and closed the distillery again before selling it in 1911 to Harvey McNair & Co. They operated the distillery from 1912 to 1914 and sold it after the First World War to John Joseph Calder, who immediately resold it to the Benromach Distillery Ltd, founded in 1919. This company operated the distillery until 1925. The closure lasted until 1937, when the distillery was bought by Joseph Hobbes, who sold it in 1938 to Train & McIntyre. Train & McIntyre were taken over in 1953 by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). DCL handed the distillery over to its subsidiary Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd (SMD), who had it renovated in 1966, converted the malt floor into a warehouse in 1968, and installed two new stills in 1974. The distillery was closed on March 24, 1983. After DCL was taken over by United Distillers, now Diageo, the stills were among the equipment dismantled. In 1993, the emptied distillery and its stock were purchased by Gordon & MacPhail. They renovated the distillery and equipped it with two new stills. The official reopening took place on October 15, 1998, by Prince Charles. One of their products is a whisky based on barley from organic farming (Benromach Organic).
