Don Papa Rum Port cask 0.7l 40 % Philippines rum with a beautiful gift tin, aged in molasses bourbon casks and ruby port casks

With the new and limited Don Papa Port Cask, the Bleeding Heart Rum Company wants to honor the seafarer Ferdinand Magellan. 500 years ago, as part of what would later become the first circumnavigation of the world, the Portuguese sailing under the Spanish flag discovered the Philippines for Europeans. The distillery, based on the Philippine island of Negros, first aged this rum, made in a column still from locally grown sugarcane molasses, for two years in ex-Bourbon barrels and then for another five years in ex-Port-wine barrels. The complete seven-year maturation took place in the climate near the volcano Mount Kanlaon. 

The official tasting notes describe the aroma as sustained, intense notes of licorice, polished oak, dark chocolate, and muscovado sugar. The flavor is reminiscent of zesty blood oranges and juicy red berries, as well as a gentle note of fresh vanilla pods. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied with great complexity. Notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, Arabica coffee, and caramel are in perfect balance with the sweetness of fresh vanilla and the subtle freshness of ripe fruit with a hint of brown sugar. The finish is said to be exceptionally long, lingering, and dry, with a gentle echo of dark cocoa powder and a hint of dried figs. "It has been 500 years since the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was commissioned by the Spanish King Charles I with an expedition to search for the so-called 'Spice Islands'," explains Stephen Carroll, owner of Don Papa. "The search became a voyage to the other side of the world and was to change the course of seafaring and history forever. The Port Cask, available as a limited edition, is inspired by this history-making journey that connected the 'old' with the new 'new' world." The Don Papa Port Cask is expected to arrive in specialist German retail in November.
