After the Rare Cask and the first Quincentennial, no further improvement was expected, but this bottling is equal to them, if not even a shade more exciting.

Nose wonderful aromas of wood, dried fruit, cherry, dark chocolate, leather, and nuts. Roasted aromas transition perfectly into licorice, brown caramel, cardamom, and baking spices.

Palate pleasant sweetness, dried fruit, wood, cocoa, leather, clove, and vanilla follow through. Licorice, roasted nuts, dark caramel, herbs, fruit bread, and coffee round out the aroma profile into an intriguing spectacle.

Finish long and intense, beautiful cask notes, wood, dried plums, dried figs, leather, espresso, roasted notes, and cocoa now combine with brown caramel, black tea, and floral hints.

The complexity from a blend of 7- and 10-year-old rums is outstanding. A serious recommendation for everyone who likes good rum - and the current bottle price is a real gift. 

With the new and limited Don Papa Port Cask, the Bleeding Heart Rum Company wants to honor the seafarer Ferdinand Magellan. 500 years ago, as part of what later became the first circumnavigation of the globe, the Portuguese explorer sailing under the Spanish flag discovered the Philippines for Europeans. The distillery, based on the Philippine island of Negros, first aged this rum, obtained from the molasses of local sugarcane in a column still, for two years in ex-bourbon casks and then for another five years in ex-port wine casks. The entire seven-year maturation took place in the climate of the nearby Mount Kanlaon volcano. Successor to the 2021 release.

The official tasting notes for the 2021 describe the aroma as having lasting, intense notes of licorice root, polished oak, dark chocolate, and muscovado sugar. The taste is said to evoke zesty blood oranges and juicy red berries, along with a gentle note of fresh vanilla pods. Rich and full-bodied on the palate with great complexity. Notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, Arabica coffee, and caramel in perfect balance with the sweetness of fresh vanilla, the subtle freshness of ripe fruit, and a hint of brown sugar. The finish is said to be exceptionally long, lingering, and dry, with a gentle echo of dark cocoa powder and a hint of dried figs. "It has been 500 years since the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was commissioned by the Spanish King Charles I with an expedition to search for the so-called 'Spice Islands'," explains Stephen Carroll, owner of Don Papa. "The search became a voyage to the other end of the world and would forever change the course of seafaring and history. The Port Cask, available as a limited edition, is inspired by this historic journey that connected the 'old' world with the 'new' world." The Don Papa Port Cask is expected to arrive in German specialist retail in November.
