Since 2009, the 3 captains have been sailing across the Atlantic with a small core crew and numerous rotating trainees, trading as it was done 150 years ago. Without engine, electricity, or navigation devices, they embark on the weeks-long journey from their home port of Amsterdam with a fully loaded cargo hold. On the way to the Caribbean, they pick up stockfish in Norway, olives and olive oil in France, and port wine or Madeira in Portugal.

Once they arrive in the Caribbean, all goods are sold in various ports to make room in the cargo hold again.

Then the journey continues to various distilleries, where classic rum is loaded into oak barrels, along with cocoa and coffee beans. Back in Amsterdam, the liquid treasures are bottled, sealed, and labeled by hand.

The special feature of these bottlings is the limited quantities. As in the past, only what is available is bottled. On the one hand, there is only space on board for about 16-22 barrels (depending on size). On the other hand, no blends are made according to specific flavor profiles, so each edition has its own unique appeal. This makes Tres Hombres rum true collector’s items!

A captain wouldn’t be a real captain if he didn’t pick out the best pieces from his cargo hold himself, so every year there are a few bottles of the so-called Captains Choice bottlings – straight from the barrel into the stoneware bottle, of course at cask strength!

Typical destinations regularly visited by Tres Hombres are the Canary Island La Palma as well as Barbados, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Especially rare are bottlings from Marie Galante, the neighboring island of Guadeloupe!
