Nose: The nose is slightly mineral, with peat smoke apparent from the outset and a malty, cereal note.
Palate: Orchard fruits, apple blossom and poached pear notes emerge, and the peat smoke becomes more prominent on the palate in notes of campfire embers.
Finish: A long, sweet finish concludes this heavily peated dram.
The independent Glengyle distillery was founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and produced a typical Campbeltown malt for over half a century before the company closed its doors in 1925. For more than 70 years, it looked as though that decision was final. Around the turn of the millennium, however, Winifred Ewing and Hedley Wright, both descendants of the Mitchell family, decided to move into the new era with growing expertise: after a four-year redevelopment phase, the distillery was ceremonially reopened on 25 March 200 4. The fact that the new malt was named "Kilkerran" reflects the pride in the region's long whisky-making tradition: the name is derived from "Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain", an early Christian settlement that once stood where Campbeltown is today.
