Due to the ideal soil conditions, the Habitation served as an important sugar supplier for France in the 19th century. Since 1882, Rhum Agricole has been distilled at the Habitation in a traditional Coffey Still (also called a Creole Column Still). Until the 1970s, H.S.E. developed splendidly and became a leading rum brand on Martinique. In 1979 and 1980, two hurricanes destroyed the facility so badly that production at Habitation Saint Etienne had to be completely halted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe brand was only revived in 1994.
